Now that Tax Season is Over..

Some rights reserved by 401(K) 2013It’s time to prepare for next year. Was it too late to do some of the things your accountant suggested? Were there deductions you didn’t keep paperwork on that would have really helped? Are you worried you won’t have the proper documentation if there is an audit?

What can you do? Start keeping more accurate records now. Spreadsheets, accounting software, and online accounts are all ways to keep track of your important information. Make sure you know how long you need to keep your paper records. Have some paper files available and keep a shredder handy for what you don’t need to keep any more. We have written several blog posts that might be of help of where to start for this chore. One example is:  Tablets, Apps, and Your Financial Health.

Next, make another appointment with your accountant or review the notes they provided while doing your taxes. Make the appointments with the professionals they recommended. Do you need to see a financial planner? Change around your investments? Start making those appointments now, while everyone else is not thinking about it. This blog post offers some help for this situation and also reminds you of other times it is good to have a financial checkup.

Finally, remember that your financial future doesn’t just revolve around taxes, profits, and losses. It’s about protecting what you have for your future and for your heirs. A qualified attorney can help you with estate planning and other legal documents, like a Power of Attorney; to make sure you stay financially fit throughout your life.
